Kouzenji Origin
It was founded in 1533 or 1575.
It is currently a branch temple of Zojoji Temple, but its former head temple was Hyakumanbenchionji Temple.
It was founded by the monk Junryo Ryoen and was originally called Kozanji Temple.
In 1621, during the fifth generation of the monk Ryoko, the temple was visited by Emperor Gomizu.
The name of the temple was changed to Kotokuzan Kouzenji Temple.
The temple was destroyed by fire three times in 1808, 1837, and 1903 and most of the temple buildings were destroyed. The present Niomon Gate and Belfry Gate were built in 1759 and 1847, respectively.
It is the family temple of the female members of the Matsumae family.
As a Jundanrin and Chuhonji, it played a central role in the Jodo sect of Buddhism in the Ezo region.

at Kouzenji Temple
Kouzenji Temple is home to the “Kechi-Myaku” cherry tree, which is over 300 years old. It is the only cherry tree in Japan that can only be seen on the grounds of Kouzenji Temple. In addition to “Kechi-Myaku” cherry tree, there are also “White double” cherry trees that radiate an atmosphere of purity and elegance. As one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Hokkaido, the temple is well known to many residents of the province.
